Begonia Marmorata
6 bulbs for € 8.30
Large flowers white, red marbled.
If there is one plant that deserves the name garden bloomer, it is the Begonia. From June to mid-autumn, the Begonia is almost more flower than plant.
The blooming begonia has full plump flowers in cheerful colors like red, pink, orange, white, and yellow. The enthusiasm with which the plant blooms, from June to mid-autumn, means that in practice you can sometimes barely see the plant for the flowers.
The begonia is a tuber that you can overwinter yourself and replant in the spring. The blooming period is also very long. The bloom lasts all summer until the first night frost occurs. Before severe frost occurs, you should remove the tubers from the ground. Store them frost-free in a dry place until spring and then replant them.
Originally, the Begonia comes from humid, warm areas spread across the world, in forested regions. The plant is named after the French botanist Michel Bégon (b. 1638), a French diplomat who had to appoint a pharmacist to search for medicinal herbs for his overseas missions on behalf of the Sun King Louis XIV. This pharmacist brought along the Franciscan monk Charles Plumier (b. 1646), who had more botanical knowledge and was also good at drawing. Plumier created a beautiful herbarium and made detailed drawings of plants to which he also gave names. In doing so, he named botanists and clients. In Haiti, a plant genus was found that Plumier named after his client Bégon, the Begonia.
