Galanthus Elwesii is a robust species and has larger flowers and coarser leaves than those of G. nivalis. G. elwessi is also significantly larger and its blooming period starts a bit earlier. Another characteristic is that the green spots on the inner flower petals are longer. An excellent choice for naturalizing.
It originally comes from Northern Greece, Bulgaria, and Western Turkey where it blooms in deciduous and coniferous forests, in clearings, under shrubs, and in stony grasslands. It is named after Henry John Elwes who discovered it in 1874 in the mountains around Smyrna, and has been cultivated since 1890.
