Colchicum Giant
3 bulbs for € 11.40
(Autumn Crocus, Naked Lady or Naked Girl)
One of the last blooming Colchicums with violet flowers and a large white base.
Plant immediately upon receipt at a depth of about 12-15 cm. Preferably in groups of 3 to 5 bulbs. Suitable for naturalizing. The bulbs produce their foliage in spring, so plant them preferably in a spot that is not mowed in spring. The dry bulbs also bloom without soil and water, making them suitable for windowsills or pots.
There are about 100 known species, most of which are hybrids. The largest number of species can be found in the Balkans and Anatolia. The Dutch name refers to the lack of leaves during flowering. The name Colchicum is derived from Colchis, the region where the mythological poisoner Medea lived.
In France, every child has heard of Colchicums thanks to the popular children's song Colchicums in the meadows (original title Autumn)
“Colchicums in the meadows
Bloom, bloom
Colchicums in the meadows
“It's the end of summer”
The plant is toxic because it contains colchicine, an alkaloid that causes disruptions in the cells of the human body. In homeopathy, it is used in the treatment of gout, rheumatism, and circulatory disorders.
