New Gloriosa available: Gloriosa Lime®
Grown in the Netherlands!
Gloriosa Lime changes color in the vase. When the flower is cut, it is lime. Once in the vase, the flower changes to white and then slowly to pink. After a week, the flower has a dark pink color.
The Gloriosa is a climbing plant (about 150 cm) with pointed green, glossy leaves, to which tendrils are attached. It is a fast grower and when the plant is over a meter tall, flower buds are formed. The plant blooms for a long time and is easy to grow.
Cultivation
Warmly grow with plenty of light, in a large pot with nutrient-rich soil. For a south-facing window in full sun, or in a greenhouse. Provide a string for support, the plant will attach itself. Do not lead it in an arc before flower buds are formed. Regularly give houseplant fertilizer. A few months after blooming, the above-ground plant dies back, leaving a bulb in the soil that must be kept dry until the next growing season.
Fill a pot 3/4 full with potting soil. Place a generous amount of pot shards at the bottom of the pot for drainage. Lay the bulbs horizontally on the potting soil with the growth point facing up, about 4-5 cm below the soil. If you place the plant outside, do so in a sunny spot and remember that the Gloriosa is frost-sensitive. After about 7 weeks, the plants will bloom.
By the beginning of December, the plant will completely die back. Cut the plant off then. Do not water anymore and let the pot with soil overwinter at room temperature (15-20° C) in a dry place.
From April you can take the new bulbs out of the dry soil. To harvest the bulbs, you need to turn the pot upside down and carefully remove the bulbs from the soil. Be careful with the new growth points, they must not be damaged. Not for consumption!
Whether you encounter the flamboyant version in red with saffron yellow or the orange (Tomas de Bruyne), the exclusive yellow-green (Lime) or this yellow beauty, the Gloriosa is always sensational.
The Gloriosa is a welcome guest in a colorful bouquet. But you can also cut the stems short and place them in trendy or retro vases and distribute them throughout the house.
