Fritillaria Lutea
3 bulbs for € 18.00
(Fritillaria Imperialis Lutea)
Also known as Crown Imperial. Beautiful yellow flowers. Plant slightly twisted in the ground so that water does not remain in the cavity. Plant at least 12 to 15 cm deep.
Humus-rich soil, preferably drained.
Because the bulbs have no skin, they are vulnerable. Handle them carefully and plant them directly in a sunny or partially shaded spot. Plant them in the autumn in nutrient-rich, loose, and humus-rich soil that is well-draining. Clay soil needs extra sand. The imperial crown prefers a spot in full sun but does not like wet feet.
The botanical name Fritillaria dates back to 1570 and comes from the Latin word ‘fritillus,’ which means “dice cup.” This refers to the shape of the flowers and possibly to the variegated color pattern that characterizes many of the flowers.
The roots of the crown imperial lie in Turkey, southeastern and western Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Kashmir mountains. However, in the mid-sixteenth century, the imperial crown came to Europe, and botanist Carolus Clusius planted the first imperial crowns in Leiden. The royal bulb was already hugely popular, and from 1610 onwards, they have been depicted in countless paintings and tiles.
In painting, Fritillarias became known thanks to Vincent Van Gogh, who created the painting “Fritillaires, couronne impériale dans un vase de cuivre” in 1886. The painting can be admired at the Musée d’Orsay.
