Cultivation in the Netherlands began in 1600, but the gladiolus was already known in Roman times. The first description dates back to Clusius in 1570. It was not until 2 centuries later that it was further developed. The bulbs were available in small quantities on the market. Due to high prices, they were only accessible to wealthy people. In 1912, 20,000 guilders were paid for 85 bulbs and 275 beads of 'Glory of Noordwijk'. Since then, the cultivation and trade in the Netherlands have developed to such an extent that the Dutch gladiolus is at the top worldwide. More than 10,000 cultivars have been registered, most of which are no longer cultivated. The botanical name, Gladiolus, from the Latin gladius, means sword. This refers to the sword- and fan-shaped leaves.
