Oriental lily
Pure white flower with a beautiful yellow center and an intoxicating fragrance!
Plant your lily bulbs well at a depth of at least 10 cm of soil above the bulb. For very thick lily bulbs, this can also be 15 cm. Planting deeply is important because the lily also develops stem roots.
In gardens, lilies are valued as attractive eye-catchers in colorful flower beds, in combination with perennials, in rock gardens and gardens with wild plants, or as potted plants.
The flowers are also beautiful as cut flowers!
Within the lilies, we distinguish between the following types:
Trumpet (Cup) lilies
These trumpet-shaped flowers can reach a diameter of 15 cm and a height of up to three meters. On a stem, four to eight flowers can bloom, and these beautiful lilies are available in various colors, such as white, yellow, pink, red, or orange. They have little foliage, and the color of this foliage is dark green. This type of lily is not fragrant.
The trumpet lily can be divided into; trumpet lilies and upright trumpet lilies.
Asiatic
This is the most well-known type of lily with upright flowers. Asiatic lilies are sturdy lilies that grow easily and are suitable for perennial planting. They are characterized by a very wide color spectrum with many bold, bright colors. They generally produce a large number of flowers. This type of lily is not fragrant.
The Asiatic lily can be divided into; single-flowered Asiatic lilies, pollen-free Asiatic lilies, bi-color Asiatic lilies, double-flowered Asiatic lilies, tiger Asiatic lilies, pot Asiatic lilies, “Pearl” Asiatic lilies.
LA Hybrids
It is no surprise that these flowers are favorites for weddings. The large flowers are available in beautiful colors. LA hybrids are known for their thick stems and beautiful leaves, and the flowers are more upright than the Orientals. These flowers are also stunning in the center of a bouquet as a focal point.
Orientals
These Oriental lilies are popular due to their various fragrances and the size of the flowers. They are available in a wide range of colors, such as white and pink. Once the flower opens, the silky petals of the flower reveal occasional brown spots or streaks. This creates a beautiful contrast with the color of the flower. These Orientals are often even larger than the Asiatic types.
The Oriental lily can be divided into; single-flowered Oriental lilies, double-flowered (Lotus©) Oriental lilies, and pot Oriental lilies.
OT Hybrids
This latest generation of lilies is known as Orienpets or OT hybrids. This interspecific cross between Orientals and Asiatics is characterized by breathtaking flowers. More colors of this type are coming onto the market.
Longiflorums
These are often referred to as Easter lilies or November lilies. This lily can grow up to 1 meter tall and is characterized by its trumpet-shaped, white, fragrant, outward-facing flowers.
Species lilies
Species lilies are unhybridized wild lilies with natural resilience and suitable for permanent planting. They come in many different colors and shapes and are characterized by a rich bloom where the flowers bloom consecutively from the bottom to the top over several weeks.
Martagon lilies
Martagon lilies are actually perennials that form bulbs and are therefore extremely suitable for permanent planting. Martagon lilies are also called Turkish lilies because the flowers resemble small turbans due to the bent petals. They are characterized by a rich bloom where the flowers bloom consecutively from the bottom to the top over several weeks. They also grow freely in nature and thus have good resilience. Due to breeding, various colors are now available. This type of lily is fragrant.
Turban lilies
Turban lilies are not a separate lily species but a term for lilies with strongly recurved petals that make the flower resemble a turban.
