A fairly rare species of Colchicum with beautiful white double flowers.
Blooms in autumn and produces leaves in spring.
Suitable for naturalizing. The bulbs produce foliage in spring, so plant them preferably in a spot that is not mowed in spring.
About 100 species are known, most of which are hybrids. The greatest number of species are found in the Balkans and Anatolia. The Dutch name refers to the absence of leaves during flowering. The name Colchicum is derived from Colchis, the region where the mythological poisoner Medea lived.
In France, every child has heard of Colchicums thanks to the popular children's song Colchiques dans les prés (originally titled Automne).
