Haemanthus (Scadoxus multiflorus)

3 bulbs for € 9.99

(Powder brush, African Blood lily)

The bloom of Scadoxus multiflorus is spectacular and forms the true highlight of the plant. It usually blooms in late spring or early summer. From the bulb, a sturdy flower stem first appears, followed by a large, spherical flower consisting of dozens of small, bright red flowers with long stamens. This gives the flower an almost firework-like appearance.

Origin:

Haemanthus, botanically better known as Scadoxus multiflorus, is originally from tropical Africa. The plant naturally grows there in warm areas with a distinct wet and dry season. It is often found at forest edges and in clearings, where it receives enough light but is not in direct bright sunlight all day.

Maintenance:

Scadoxus multiflorus is a bulbous plant and relatively easy to care for:

  • Location: Light to partial shade. Avoid bright, direct afternoon sun.

  • Temperature: Likes warmth; ideal is 18–25 °C. Not frost hardy.

  • Watering: Water regularly during growth and blooming, but avoid waterlogging. During the dormant period (autumn/winter), water sparingly.

  • Soil: Well-draining potting soil, possibly mixed with some sand.

  • Fertilization: During the growing season, fertilize every two weeks with liquid plant food.

  • Dormant period: After the leaves die back, the bulb needs a dormant period. Move the plant to a cooler location and give very little water.

Attention: poisonous plant!

With the right care, Scadoxus multiflorus can bloom for many years and show its spectacular flowers year after year.
