The name of this bulb comes from Greek mythology. Hyacinthus was a handsome athlete who was adored by Apollo. To Apollo's dismay, Hyacinthus was fatally wounded during a discus throwing competition. From the blood of Hyacinthus bloomed a flower that was later named the hyacinth.
