Iris Germanica Wine and Roses
3 roots for € 7.20
Velvety purple and pink flowers that appear from mid-spring to summer.
Type from 1963 (David Hall)
Iris Germanica is a perennial plant and winter hardy.
From the heavy tubers, fresh green leaves grow with sturdy flower stems in between. Tear the roots every 4 or 5 years. Easy to grow, very winter hardy, but you can cover them a bit during the first winter.
Iris Germanica blooms in regular garden soil, preferably even slightly poorer soil. Well-drained. When planting, make sure that the root tubers stick out almost halfway above the ground.
Iris Germanica are also known as bearded irises. They owe this to the beard that grows on their lower leaves. These are meant to attract bumblebees.
