The name is said to be derived from the Greek sea nymphs Nereis. When a ship sank off the coast of Guernsey and the bulbs began to bloom, they were compared to the beautiful daughters of Nerues, the god of the sea. The bowdenii grows best in a place where the bulbs can enjoy full sun and find protection from wind and rain.
The bulbs are very easy to keep. Cover them with some leaf material before the frost, and next year you will enjoy beautiful flowers again. They last for many years.
Nicknames include Cliff Lily (in the Netherlands) and Guernsey Lily. In England, they are immensely popular. The National Nerine Collection of England is also maintained at Exbury Garden by Nick de Rothschild.
Nerines bloom very late; when all summer flowers have already faded, they start blooming during the months of September, October, and November. So you can extend the gardening season well with these bulbs.
