Ornithogalum Saundersiae
5 bulbs for € 9.00
Star of Bethlehem
White flower with a blackish green heart. Suitable for the garden or on the balcony. Very long flowering period, also as a cut flower.
This species originally comes from South Africa and blooms from a crown of lance-shaped leaves with upright, somewhat cream-colored flowers with a black heart, the ovary. The softly glossy dark green leaves grow from an upright rosette. It loves a sunny spot but is not completely frost hardy. The Ornithogalum bulbs can remain in the garden during a mild winter, but we advise covering them well with good winter protection (fleece, a layer of leaves, or straw). In harsher winters, it is best to remove them from the ground to overwinter them dry and frost-free. If you plant the Ornithogalum in a pot, we definitely recommend overwintering it in a cool, frost-free place.
Also known as florist's sorrow because the flowers bloom for so long. This white flower on a long stem of over 1 meter tall looks beautiful at the back of the border.
Nicknames: southern wind lily, Cape bird milk, Star of Bethlehem.
