The tulip is the most widely grown bulb in the Netherlands. Tulips cover almost half of all bulb fields (more than 12,000 hectares). (Source: CBS 2016).
Tulips were introduced to the Western world by the Viennese ambassador to Turkey, Ogier Gisleen van Busbeke, who wrote about the flowers he had seen in Edirne, Turkey, in 1551. He later sent some of their seeds to Austria.
The arrival of a shipment of tulip bulbs in Antwerp in 1562 marked the beginning of tulip cultivation in Europe. The first documented specimens were planted by the Flemish botanist Carolus Clusius in the Hortus botanicus Leiden, which he managed from 1593 onward.
