Zantedeschia (Calla) Macau
3 bulbs for € 11.99
Large dark purple, almost black flowers with white speckled leaves. A must-have, limited availability. Not fully winter hardy. Planting depth 10 cm.
The calla originates from South Africa and was first described in the 18th century by the botanist Giovanni Zantedeschi, after whom the plant is named. Besides zantedeschia, the calla is also known as the cup plant, because according to Greek myths, Greek gods drank from the chalice of this flower.
Calla is a lovely plant for your terrace or balcony, but it also thrives in the ground. Water the Calla regularly and provide plant food every two weeks for abundant blooming. A spot with partial shade will yield the most flowers. Choose pots with a hole in the bottom (so excess rain and watering can easily drain away). Enjoy your summer!
Callas grow from tubers. The difference between a bulb and a tuber is as follows:
A bulb has layers and its structure is comparable to that of an onion. Just cut an onion in half and you are actually looking at the inside of a bulb. You see all the layers stacked on top of each other, surrounded on the outside by a few dried layers. (These layers are called scales.)
